Stoptober 2018

What is Stoptober?

Stoptober is a national campaign initiated by Public Health England to encourage smokers to ditch the habit. It’s inspired by figures that show those who stop smoking for 28 days or more are 5x more likely to quit for good.

The campaign aims to help smokers by raising awareness of the benefits of quitting and the tools that are available to help them go smoke free.

Whether you are looking to quit smoking yourself or support someone you love in giving up, with tonnes of support and helpful resources, Stoptober 2018 is a great time to give up.

Tools to Help You Quit

Most smokers know that it’s the nicotine in cigarettes that gets you hooked. However, it’s also often the social and habitual act of smoking a cigarette which can make quitting harder.

Click on the sections below to find out more about the most common methods and tools for quitting smoking.

Going Cold Turkey

Some smokers might opt to completely cut out cigarettes without the help of any nicotine or devices that mimic the act of smoking. This is a pretty hardcore way to do it and takes a lot of willpower but is the best advised method by healthcare professionals.

Nicotine Patches

Nicotine patches are designed to be stuck onto an arm and release nicotine which is absorbed through the skin. This isn’t the fastest way to get a nicotine hit but will help to stave off the cravings. This does however leave a gap where the habitual nature of smoking is concerned which some smokers may struggle with.

Nicotine Gum

Nicotine is released into the saliva and is absorbed by the body via the gum. Some smokers may prefer this to patches as the act of chewing gives them something to do and distracts from the need to go for a smoke.

Nicotine Inhalers

As the name suggests, these are small plastic inhalers which contain vapourised nicotine. These help with replicating the action of smoking but you don’t get the sensation of inhaling and exhaling smoke.

E-Cigarettes & Vaping

E Cigarettes or ‘vapes’ consist of a battery, a pre-filled or refillable tank or cartridge and an atomiser; the heating element which turns liquid to vapour. The tank is filled with ‘e-liquid’ which is made from propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and, optionally, nicotine. You can find out more about e-liquid and it’s ingredients here.

E Cigs produce vapour in different volumes depending on the type of device and provide a similar sensation to inhaling and exhaling smoke. E-liquids and refills can be purchased in a huge array of flavours and are available in nicotine strengths ranging from 0mg up to 20mg.

E Cigarettes offer a wide range of options and customisation and are a popular choice for those who want to replicate the action of smoking.

The Best Way to Quit Smoking

This depends entirely on the individual. Some people may find that powering through without any nicotine replacement is the best way for them to stop. Others might find that they just need to stave off the nicotine cravings. Some might find it helpful to have a tool that replicates the act of smoking.

If you want take part in Stoptober 2018, think about your habits and look at the various options available to weigh up which tools you think will work for you. You can always try a few different methods and tools to see what suits you best. Quitting is always going to take some element of will power, so make sure that you get support from friends and family and really commit yourself to giving up smoking.

How to Choose a Vape Kit

There are many different types of e cigarette available so if you decide you want to switch to vaping you have a great range of options. Most vape kits fall into one of three categories. These include cigalikes, classic vape kits or vape pens and sub ohm kits.

Designed to closely resemble a cigarette, cigalike e-cigs are affordable and super easy to use, making them a popular choice for beginners.

Classic vape kits are often pen-shaped, refillable devices. They are well suited to both beginners and more experienced vapers and produce a modest amount of vapour.

Sub ohm vape kits come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are more suited to experienced vapers. They produce bigger clouds of vapour and often have customisable settings.

Tips for Quitting Smoking

One of the first things you can do is to remove all smoking paraphernalia from your home, car, bags etc.
Be prepared! If you are using a nicotine replacement tool, make sure you stock up and always have it to hand.
Tell your friends & family that you’re trying to quit. This support could make the difference between you caving or making it through the 28 days smoke free.
Think about your triggers and habits. What makes you light up a cigarette? If you always go for a cigarette on your work break, think of something else you can do in this time. Perhaps a Sudoku puzzle or reading the news or a favourite blog to distract you.
Find your local stop smoking service. This is a free service from the NHS which offers one-to-one or group support to help you quit.
Set aside the money you would have spent on cigarettes in a savings account or piggy bank. You’ll soon see your savings grow and money is a great motivator!
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Many smokers worry about putting on weight when they quit smoking. Follow the other tips and make sure you’re prepared. That way you’ll be less likely to replace smoking with other unhealthy habits.
Keep a diary or take note of your health and how you’re feeling. Quitting can have positive effects on your health even after just a few days.
