PHE: Vaping 95% Less Harmful than Smoking

Public Health England Compiles Report on E-Cigarette Evidence

Since the rise in popularity of e-cigarettes in Britain, with over 3.1 million adults using them today, there has been much debate as to whether they are a safer alternative to smoking or are just as harmful. This has led to Public Health England asking a team of experts to examine the current evidence and a report has now been compiled. The report suggests that vaping could be a ‘game changer’ for persuading people to give up cigarettes.

What Could This Mean For Smokers in the UK?

Currently, around 76,000 people die every year as a result of cigarette smoking. The experts who compiled the report believe that this figure could reduce to just 4,000 if every smoker switched to e-cigarettes.

They have also given an estimate that, in terms of safety, e-cigarettes could be 95% less harmful than tobacco. It was even suggested in their conclusions that they could be prescribed on the NHS in the future, to help smokers quit. They recommend that e-cigarettes are suggested as a smoking cessation aid, alongside other evidence-based medications currently used by stop-smoking services.

With almost half the population (44.8%) unaware that vaping is less harmful than smoking, these results could also turn around the public perception of vaping. This could finally mean that vaping is seen as much more favourable than smoking.
