E-Cigarettes Are Safer than Smoking
We often get asked ‘are e cigarettes safe?’, so we’ve covered some common e-cigarette health and safety related questions below. If you feel your question hasn’t been answered, please get in touch.
Do They Contain Harmful Chemicals?
E cigarettes are made from five main ingredients; nicotine, propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG), nicotine and flavourings. Find out more about our ingredients in our guide.
A recent study by the BBC programme ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’ compared the level of toxins in the saliva, urine and breath of a group of smokers compared with a group who smoked only e-cigarettes. The results showed that:
Vapers (those who used e-cigarettes) had similar levels of nicotine (the drug that makes smoking addictive) found in their samples compared with the cigarette smokers.
The levels of Carbon Monoxide were much lower in e-cigarette users compared to cigarette smokers. The levels in the samples from e-cigarette users were close to the levels of non smokers.
In 2015, Public Health England stated that their best estimate is that “E cigarettes are 95% less harmful than smoking”. Due to being a fairly new product, there is yet to be any significant information on the long-term effects of vaping.
Are E-Cigarettes Addictive?
Some e cigarettes and e liquids contain nicotine, which is the addictive chemical in cigarettes. E Liquids and e cigarette cartomizers/refills come in a variety of nicotine strengths for all vapers. You can choose cartomizer refills that range from medium nicotine at 12 mg, high nicotine at 24 mg and extra high nicotine at 24 mg and if you’d prefer not to have any nicotine at all, you can also purchase our 0 mg, nicotine free refills.
Is Nicotine Bad for Me?
Nicotine is a stimulant (Psychology Today) and some scientists argue that it can have a similar effect on your health as your regular morning coffee (Scientific American). For those concerned with nicotine, there are e-cigarettes that don’t contain any. As above, nicotine is a highly addictive substance.
Will My E-Cigarette Explode?
There have been a number of stories in the media about exploding e-cigarettes. These incidents are extremely rare but there are a number of precautionary steps you can take. In many cases where these incidents have happened it’s because someone has used the wrong charger or batteries with their e-cigarette. You should only ever use the chargers and batteries that come with your kit.
We would always advise that electronic cigarette batteries should be switched off when it’s not in use. Both OK Vape Pen batteries and SMOK & Aspire batteries can be switched off by pressing the button 5 times.
A lot of the reported incidents of e cigs exploding have been caused by loose batteries coming into contact with each other or other metals such as coins, which can cause them to short and catch fire or explode. It’s important to always follow battery safety instructions for ANY type of lithium ion battery. Always ensure batteries such as the Samsung 25R 18560 battery are protected from coming into contact with other batteries or metal items.
Will E-Cigarettes Burn My Mouth?
E-cigarettes produce vapour at temperatures much lower than steam to produce a great taste and won’t burn your mouth. If you feel that the temperature of your e-cigarette is too high, please do get in touch.
