What Are Vape Coils?

The coil is the part of an e-cigarette or vape that turns the liquid into vapour. Contained within an outer metal casing, the coil consists of a wicking material that soaks up the vape juice and a coil wire that heats up and turns the liquid in the material to vapour.

All e cigarettes with replaceable coils will have their own range of coils made specifically for that device. However, you’ll often find that each device has multiple coil options. Each coil will have a specific ‘ohm rating’ to differentiate between them.

What Are Ohms in Relation to Vaping?

Ohms are a measure of resistance. Without getting too ‘science-y’, essentially when we talk about the ohm rating of a vape coil, we are referring to how much vapour it will produce and how warm the vapour will be.

Coils play an important part in the flavour & temperature of your vape, and how much vapour is produced. Vape coils with an ohm rating of 1.0 ohm and above will produce a cooler, thinner vapour. Those with an ohm rating below 1.0 ohm will produce a thicker, warmer vapour. These are sometimes referred to as ‘sub ohm‘ coils.

Mouth to Lung (MTL) & Direct to Lung (DTL) Coils

You may come across the terms ‘mouth to lung’ (MTL) and ‘direct to lung’ (DTL) in relation to e cigarette devices and their respective coils. These terms relate to how the vapour from a device is inhaled and vape coils have a large part to play in this.

Direct-to-lung vaping is where the vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs from a vape. This is also known as sub ohm vaping, as mentioned above. Coils with a resistance below 1 ohm (a.k.a. sub ohm coils) are suitable for direct to lung vaping and sub ohm or DTL devices.

Mouth-to-lung vaping is where the vapour is inhaled first into the mouth, then into the lungs – similar to how smoke from a cigarette is inhaled. Coils with a resistance over 1 ohm are suitable for mouth to lung vaping and MTL devices.

What Coils Do I Need for my Vape Kit?

Some devices are specifically made for use with 1.0 ohm + coils. Other vape kits are designed specifically for ‘sub-ohm’ vaping and will require coils with a resistance below 1 ohm. Lots of modern kits, however, can be used with both types of coils and will come with recommended settings to use with any compatible coils.

You can check what kind of coils your device requires by looking at the instructions or checking the rating of the coils that come with your device. If you’ve bought a vape starter kit from OK Vape, we list any compatible coils on the product page for that device.

How Often Should I Change a Vape Coil?

This all depends on how much you vape, what settings your device has and which e liquid you are using. However, most vapers find a coil lasts them between 1 to 3 weeks.

Don’t forget, you should always prime a new coil before using it.
