E-Cigarette & Vaping Glossary

For those who are new to vaping, there are many terms that you'll find unfamiliar. The language can seem confusing at first, especially when many places use it without any explanation, so we’ve decided to put this useful glossary containing some of the main terms together for you.

Vape Kits

Atomiser
The electronic component inside the e-cigarette which turns the e-cigarette’s nicotine solution into vapour.

Cartomiser
A combined cartridge (containing the nicotine solution) and atomiser.

Clearomiser
One of the main components of the second-generation e-cigarette, a clearomiser is a cartomiser with clear walls, allowing the user to see how much e-liquid remains in the cartridge.

Coil
Nowadays, most e cigs or vape kits that are ‘open systems’ (i.e. a refillable tank) feature replaceable ‘atomizer heads’. These are often just referred to as ‘coils’ but contain the coil wire and wicking material. The cotton wick soaks up the e-liquid and the coil wire heats the juice up and turns it into vapour.

Refills
Used in rechargeable cigalikes, e-cig refills often come in cartridge form and are used to replace used-up cartridges.

E-Liquids

E-Liquid
Used to refill second-gen e-cigarettes, e-liquids come in a variety of flavours, from standard tobacco and menthol to bubblegum and cheesecake. Also referred to as e-juice.

50/50 E-liquid
A vape juice with a 50/50 ratio of the two main e liquid ingredients; propylene glycol (PG)  and vegetable glycerin (VG). These well balanced e-liquids are suitable for most vape kits. Read out blog on 50/50 e-liquids to find out more.

Nicsalts
Nicotine salts are e-liquids made from nicotine extracted from the tobacco leaf. They are higher in nicotine strength and provide a smoother nicotine hit. Find out more in our nicotine salt blog post.

Priming
Priming is allowing time for your liquid to fully saturate the wick in your coil.

Propylene Glycol
PG is a colourless liquid with a slightly sweet taste. It is commonly used as a preservative in the food industry. Used a base ingredient in e-liquids, it has a lower viscosity than vegetable glycerine (VG).

Vegetable Glycerine
VG is a colourless liquid used as a sweatner and thickener in the food industry. It is another base ingredient in e-liquids and is used as a sweatner.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Vaping Styles

Direct to Lung
Direct to lung (DTL) vaping is where you inhale the vapour directly from the mouthpiece into your lungs without it staying in your mouth first.

Mouth to Lung
Mouth to lung (MTL) vaping is where you inhale the vapour from the mouthpiece into your mouth before inhaling it into your lungs.

Sub Ohm
Sub Ohm vaping is a DTL style of vaping that produces large smoke clouds. Sub Ohm devices use low resistant coils that are under an ohm.  Find out more about the different style of vaping in our beginners guide to vaping.

Types of E-Cigarettes

Cigalike
Also known as a first generation cigarette, a cigalike is an e-cigarette which resembles a regular tobacco cigarette.

Disposable E-Cigarette
An e-cigarette with limited uses, designed to be thrown away after its liquid has been used up.

Electronic Cigarette
Any cigarette which emits vapour, rather than smoke, with the nicotine vaporised by an electronic atomiser, in contrast to regular cigarettes. Also known as e-cigarettes and e-cigs.

Starter Kits
Kits which contain everything you need to get started with using an e-cigarette, normally containing a cartomiser, batteries, chargers and a manual.

Mod
An e-cigarette which has been modified into a custom design, often to achieve a better ‘hit’ of vapour or a larger vapour cloud.

Second Generation E-Cigarettes
Refer to e-cigarettes which use tank systems, in contrast to cigalikes, which are first e-generation e-cigarettes.

Vaping Terms

Throat Kick/Hit

To use or inhale vapour from an e-cigarette.
