Types of E liquid & How To Choose One

    What Are E-Liquids?

E-liquid, otherwise known as 'vape liquid' or 'vape juice', is the fluid used in vape kits and electronic cigarettes to create flavoured vapour.

E liquids are made from 3 main ingredients; vegetable glycerine, propylene glycol and flavourings. Most e liquids also contain nicotine, however there are plenty of flavours of vape juice that have nicotine free options.

There are quite a few 'types' of e liquid, but they generally all fall into a few main categories. If you're new to vaping, it's a good idea to know what these are so that you can choose the correct type for your vape kit or e-cigarette. Find out more about these below.

    Types Of E-Liquid

All e liquids contain a ratio of two important ingredients. These are VG (vegetable glycerin) and PG (propylene glycol). VG is a thicker substance whereas PG is thinner. Different ratios of these ingredients will affect the viscosity of the vape liquid and therefore which types of device they will be most suitable for. They also have an effect on the vapour and 'throat hit' that an e liquid will produce:

    • E-liquids with a VG bias tend to produce larger vapour clouds with little to no throat hit.
    • E Liquids with a PG bias provide the hit to the back of the throat that is often favoured by those trying to give up smoking. These liquids tend to produce a more subtle amount of vapour.

E Liquid PG & VG Ratios

Most e liquid bottles will indicate what ratio of PG and VG ingredients they contain. You can use this information to work out what type of vape experience you will get and which devices they will be suitable for.

    • Vape Liquids with Over 50% VG

These will be suitable for kits and coils with less than 1 ohm resistance. These coils are usually provided for vape kits designed for 'sub ohm' or 'DTL' vaping.

    • Vape Liquids with Over 50% PG

These will be suitable for kits and coils with more than 1 ohm resistance. These coils are usually provided with e-cigarettes designed for 'classic' or 'MTL' vaping.

    • Vape Liquids with a Balanced 50% PG/50% VG Ratio

50/50 vape liquid will be suitable for use with most kits, tanks and coils. However, if your coil's resistance is below 0.4 ohm, we would recommend opting for a higher VG e liquid.

You can find out more about PG & VG in our e liquid ingredients guide here.

How to Find Out Which E Liquid is Best for My Device

The quickest and easiest way to do this is to look at the coils for your device. Replaceable coils will always have the ohm rating printed on them. Check the metal casing and look for the ohm rating, then refer to the guidelines above to find out if you should use a higher PG or higher VG e liquid.

As above, as long as the ohm rating isn't super low, a safe bet is to go for a balanced 50% e liquid.

How Do I Decide the Right Nicotine Strength For Me?

As a general rule, consider choosing an e-liquid with 3mg of nicotine if you only smoke one or two cigarettes a day, 6mg if you smoke under 10 per day and want a little bit of throat hit, 12mg if you smoke up to and above 20 a day and 18mg if you are a heavier smoker.

There are also e liquids available without any nicotine. However, if you are trying to give up cigarettes, you may want to start with an e-liquid that helps you with cravings in the first few weeks or months after you have stopped smoking.

You can find more information to help you choose the right nicotine strength in this guide.

    Why 50/50 E-Liquids Are a Great Option

50/50 e-liquids offer the best of both worlds, with a balanced ratio of PG and VG.

In recent years, this ratio has become increasingly popular due to it's versatility. The 50% PG/50% VG blend makes these e-liquids suitable for use in the majority of vape kits or pod vapes and offer a perfect balance of flavour and vapour production.

How to Choose an E Liquid Flavour

If you are new to vaping, we would recommend going with a familiar flavour to make the switch as smooth as possible. There are a wide variety of different Tobacco and Menthol flavours available that are perfect for smokers transitioning to vaping.

However, if you fancy trying something a little different, there is a whole world of flavours out there. Opt for fresh, fruity flavours or complex flavours designed to replicate sweets, drinks or even deserts.

If you're still having trouble choosing an e-liquid, take a look at some our fantastic value pick & mix e-liquid multibuy offers. These offer great value and allow you to pick and mix from our wide range of 50/50 e-liquid flavours from just £2.17 a bottle.
